Saving Mothers and Daughters in Kenya
In Mombasa, Kenya, single mothers and their children depend on the Pastoral Center that Maryknoll Brother Frank Ten Hoopen is building to keep them safe.
A Maryknoll counseling program will get women and girls off the streets and reunite them with their families. For just $50 a month, you can cover the annual school fees of two young students.
Brother Frank Tenhoopen was born in the Dutch settlements on the west coast of Michigan. He lived there until 1963 when he moved to Bellaire, Michigan with his family.
Brother Frank went to secondary school in Ohio at St. Peter and Paul Seminary. He earned a B.A. from the University of Detroit and later received an M.A. from the Maryknoll School of Theology. He joined the Maryknoll Brothers in 1977 and took first Oath with them in 1978. In August 1979 he traveled to Nairobi, Kenya where he worked with the Kenya Overseas Training Program (OTP) ministering to young people at Buru Buru III Catholic Church. After two years Brother Frank returned to the U.S. for a year of reflection before taking his final Oath in 1982.
Later that same year, Brother Frank returned to Kenya to work in the Kilifi Catholic Mission where his energetic spirit brought him many assignments. In 1990 he was called to Mombasa by the Archbishop's Office to create an office for youth concerns. Today he is Director of the Diocesan Youth Ministry program while also serving as Director of the Diocesan Guest House and Assistant Regional Superior.
Brother Frank has recently turned his attention to the development of a Pastoral Center in Mombasa where his ministry can continue to help children, youth, women, and the elderly. In his role as Director of the Pastoral Center, Brother Frank's strong belief that we are all "treasures in the field" motivates his mission to inspire faith and create health and hope for Kenyan families in need.
